Eating disorders

Eaing disorders are so common in America that 1 or 2 out of every 100 students will struggle with one.

Eating disorders are more than just going on a diet to lose weight or trying to make sure you exercise every day. They're extremes in eating behavior — the diet that never ends and gradually gets more restrictive, for example. Or the person who can't go out with friends because he or she thinks it's more important to go running to work off a piece of candy.

The most common types of eating disorder are anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa (usually called simply "anorexia" and "bulimia"). But other food-related disorders, like binge eating disorders, body image disorders, and food phobias, are showing up more frequently than they used to.

Anorexia
People with anorexia have an extreme fear of weight gain and a distorted view of their body size and shape. As a result, they can't maintain a normal body weight. Some people with anorexia restrict their food intake by dieting, fasting, or excessive exercise. They hardly eat at all — and the small amount of food they do eat becomes an obsession.

Other people with anorexia do something called binge eating and purging, where they eat a lot of food and then try to get rid of the calories by forcing themselves to vomit, using laxatives, or exercising excessively.

Bulimia
Bulimia is similar to anorexia. With bulimia, a person binge eats (eats a lot of food) and then tries to compensate in extreme ways, such as forced vomiting or excessive exercise, to prevent weight gain. Over time, these steps can be dangerous.

To be diagnosed with bulimia, a person must be binging and purging regularly, at least twice a week for a couple of months. Binge eating is different from going to a party and "pigging out" on pizza, then deciding to go to the gym the next day and eat more healthfully. People with bulimia eat a large amount of food (often junk food) at once, usually in secret. The person typically feels powerless to stop the eating and can only stop once he or she is too full to eat any more. Most people with bulimia then purge by vomiting, but may also use laxatives or excessive exercise.

Although anorexia and bulimia are very similar, people with anorexia are usually very thin and underweight but those with bulimia may be a normal weight or even overweight.

Binge Eating Disorder
This eating disorder is similar to anorexia and bulimia because a person binges regularly on food (more than three times a week). But, unlike the other eating disorders, a person with binge eating disorder does not try to "compensate" by purging the food.

Anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder all involve unhealthy eating patterns that begin gradually and build to the point where a person feels unable to control them.

Anorexia and Bulimia: What to Look For
Sometimes a person with anorexia or bulimia starts out just trying to lose some weight or hoping to get in shape. But the urge to eat less or to purge spirals out of control.

People with anorexia or bulimia frequently have an intense fear of being fat or think that they are fat when they are not. A person with anorexia may weigh food before eating it or compulsively count the calories of everything. When it seems "normal" or "cool" to do things like restrict food intake to an unhealthy level, it's a sign that a person has a problem.

So how do you know if a person is struggling with anorexia or bulimia? You can't tell just by looking at someone. A person who loses a lot of weight may have another health condition or may be losing weight through healthy eating and exercise.

Here are some signs that a person may have anorexia or bulimia:
Anorexia
1. becomes very thin, frail, or emaciated
2. obsessed with eating, food, and weight control
3. weighs herself or himself repeatedly
4. counts or portions food carefully
5. only eats certain foods, avoiding foods like dairy, meat, wheat, etc. (of course, 6. lots of people who are allergic to a particular food or are vegetarians avoid certain foods)
7. exercises excessively
8. feels fat
9. withdraws from social activities, especially meals and celebrations involving food
10. may be depressed, lethargic (lacking in energy), and feel cold a lot

Bulimia
1. fears weight gain
2. intensely unhappy with body size, shape, and weight
3. makes excuses to go to the bathroom immediately after meals
4. may only eat diet or low-fat foods (except during binges)
5. regularly buys laxatives, diuretics, or enemas
6. spends most of his or her time working out or trying to work off calories
7. withdraws from social activities, especially meals and celebrations involving food

What Causes Eating Disorders?
No one is really sure what causes eating disorders, although there are many theories about why people develop them. Many people who develop an eating disorder are between 13 and 17 years old. This is a time of emotional and physical changes, academic pressures, and a greater degree of peer pressure. Although there is a sense of greater independence during the teen years, teens might feel that they are not in control of their personal freedom and, sometimes, of their bodies. This can be especially true during puberty.
For girls, even though it's completely normal (and necessary) to gain some additional body fat during puberty, some respond to this change by becoming very fearful of their new weight. They might mistakenly feel compelled to get rid of it any way they can.

When you combine the pressure to be like celeb role models with the fact that during puberty our bodies change, it's not hard to see why some teens develop a negative view of themselves.

Many people with eating disorders also can be depressed or anxious, or have other mental health problems such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). There is also evidence that eating disorders may run in families. Although part of this may be our in genes, it's also because we learn our values and behaviors from our families.

Sports and Eating Disorders
Athletes and dancers are particularly vulnerable to developing eating disorders around the time of puberty, as they may want to stop or suppress growth (both height and weight).

Coaches, family members, and others may encourage teens in certain sports — such as gymnastics, ice-skating, and ballet — to be as thin as possible. Some athletes and runners are also encouraged to weigh less or shed body fat at a time when they are biologically destined to gain it.

Effects of Eating Disorders
Eating disorders are serious medical illnesses. They often go along with other problems such as stress, anxiety, depression, and substance use. People with eating disorders also can have serious physical health problems, such as heart conditions or kidney failure. People who weigh at least 15% less than the normal weight for their height may not have enough body fat to keep their organs and other body parts healthy. In severe cases, eating disorders can lead to severe malnutrition and even death.

With anorexia, the body goes into starvation mode, and the lack of nutrition can affect the body in many ways:
1. a drop in blood pressure, pulse, and breathing rate
2. hair loss and fingernail breakage
3. loss of periods
4. lanugo hair — a soft hair that can grow all over the skin
5. lightheadedness and inability to concentrate
6. anemia
7. swollen joints
8. brittle bones

With bulimia, constant vomiting and lack of nutrients can cause these problems:
1. constant stomach pain
2. damage to a person's stomach and kidneys
3. tooth decay (from exposure to stomach acids)
4. "chipmunk cheeks," when the salivary glands permanently expand from throwing up so often
5. loss of periods
6. loss of the mineral potassium (this can contribute to heart problems and even death)
7.A person with binge eating disorder who gains a lot of weight is at risk of 8.developing diabetes, heart disease, and some of the other diseases associated with being overweight.

The emotional pain of an eating disorder can take its toll, too. When a person becomes obsessed with weight, it's hard to concentrate on much else. Many people with eating disorders become withdrawn and less social. People with eating disorders might not join in on snacks and meals with their friends or families, and they often don't want to break from their intense exercise routine to have fun.

People with eating disorders often spend a lot of mental energy on planning what they eat, how to avoid food, or their next binge, spend a lot of their money on food, hide in the bathroom for a long time after meals, or make excuses for going on long walks (alone) after a meal.

Treatment for Eating Disorders
Fortunately, people with eating disorders can get well and gradually learn to eat normally again. Eating disorders involve both the mind and body. So medical doctors, mental health professionals, and dietitians will often be involved in a person's treatment and recovery.

Therapy or counseling is a critical part of treating eating disorders — in many cases, family therapy is one of the keys to eating healthily again. Parents and other family members are important in helping a person see that his or her normal body shape is perfectly fine and that being excessively thin can be dangerous.

If you want to talk to someone about eating disorders and you don't feel as though you can approach a parent, try talking to a teacher, a neighbor, your doctor, or another trusted adult. Remember that eating disorders are very common among teens. Treatment options depend on each person and their families, but many options are available to help you overcome an eating disorder. Therapy can help you feel in charge again and learn to like your body, just as it is.

Comm Serv Trip to Tmn Megah

I knew some of us actually doubted and wasn't sure whether to go or not, because communicating with the down syndrome kids is never an easy task. Nevertheless, I'm sure those of you who went had a great time, right? (:

So, it was on the 24th of April 2009. We left school for Taman Megah, PJ at around 2.30pm. When we were there, we divided ourselves into groups to spend time with the kids. There were actually orphans living there, besides the down syndrome kids.

We then had a short colouring session. The kids had to colour Nemo, accompanied by the Interactors. (:

We didn't actually get the opportunity to spend time with all the kids, because some of them were sleeping, and some of them couldn't talk, walk or even move. =/ Some of the kids even needed physiotherapy.

After spending some time there with the kids, it was time for us to say goodbye.

We definitely had a great time there because we've learned a lot from this trip. It wasn't just learning about how to communicate better with them the next time, but also to be aware of their presence and lend them a hand when they need our help.

IU 09: America, Here I Come!

No. I'm not going to put "sginteract.blogspot.com" on every single picture that was taken on the IU night. Why? Because there’s too many of them!! So, if anyone of you decided to use our IU night pictures, please credit the Interact club and also the professional photographer, Gary Ng.

Our IU day which was on the 28 of March 2009 was awesome. One of the very best events ever held in Sri Garden. That was what Mr. Khaw, principal of Sri Garden had stated. The IU day theme this year is “America, Here I come!” and who’s the amazing IU Director who made it all happen? He is Hiew Jian Yong. (And also not forgetting all of the Interact & Youthact club members who contributed their time and strength.)

Guess what? This year, was the first time IU day was completely SOLD OUT before the day itself.

I don't know what they're really doing but I think they're ushering the people into the hall.

The Grand Opening & Performances

Well, the performance kick off around 7.30pm after singing the National Anthem and also the Interact Song. Then ofcourse, there were also speeches from Mr Khaw Ah Sheng, the principal of Sri Garden and also the VIP.

And they were great.

As all of you guys know, the IU night held on 28 March 2009 was a huge success. I know it's April now. However, It’s never too late to thank all of the people who were involved in making this event a success. Haha.

I know you have done your very best in this event. Although there were some mistakes here and there, I understand that it is not entirely your fault. On the contrary, well done and great job in coordinating your Youthact members, whether it was in exhibition, hall decoration or hall duty. Without your help in handling to settle the tickets or promoting the tickets, I believe that the tickets would not be sold out that fast. Hence, congrats!!! Not forgetting other Youthact members, thank you so much especially to Britney, Visharn and Devyani.

Hey, buddy! Thanks a lot for the excellent coordination of food as well as the budget control. Without you there to make sure everyone get the food in less than 10 minutes, the show wouldn’t be able to run smoothly as planned. Also, thanks for helping Mei Shen to coordinate the tickets. Oh, thanks to your grandma as well for the chicken chop she made for the VIPs. Yusri, thanks for assisting Terance and I sincerely apologise for canceling the PowerPoint quiz show that you have been preparing, due to time constraint.

The next top Fashionista? Who? None other than you! What an interesting yet educational fashion show. No one could be better than you in coordinating and putting this fashion show into a great piece of art. Thanks to you too, Vivian, for being there to assist, help and share the load with Sylvia. You! Well, thank you for being present to do all the necessary paperwork from proposal, invitation letter to official security guards letter. I know you really had a difficult time coordinating the tickets. But seriously, without you coordinating the tickets, I think we will face many difficulties on IU Night. I know on that day that you face a lot of pressure and difficulties from many parties but you handle it well. To those who had helped her in managing the tickets, a big thank you to you all.

Surprise, surprise! Didn’t expect your name to be here? Thanks so much for helping out with the fashion show. Your help in doing the make up for the models (especially Charlie) had made the fashion show a fabulous one. Sorry for the trouble you have to face on that day by some parties and why do I keep on saying thank you to you? Because just like Mei Yee, you are not even an interactor and yet you helped out so much! So, thank you again!

Simply put, all members had work really hard and placed a lot of effort into making this IU Night a great success. I can’t express how lucky I am to have you guys (and girls!) to help out in this event. Once again, thanks to all members who had contributed to make this IU Night a marvelous one. If I ever forget to acknowledge you, please forgive me because there are just too many to thank.

The really awesome emcees! Without you girls, the event would definitely not be that AWESOME and successful. Why is it that this trio did a fantastic job? They managed to emcee so well even with the constant changes of the agenda at the very last minute. I have to say they did a wonderful grand opening. Say "NO" to FUR!

Can you imagine yourself being kept in a tiny cage with many others, with barely enough room for everyone to live in? Then day by day, those kept in the cage with you are being led away, one by one.

You can hear them cry, scream and moan.
You can see them being tortured and skinned alive.

Sooner or later, you know that it is going to be your turn.This is what the animals are facing in many places all over the world. They are all suffering this cruel fate just because some people enjoy wearing their fur.

Every year, millions of animals such as coyotes, lynxes, beavers, otters, bunnies, raccoons, foxes, minks, opossums and coyotes are trapped, drowned or beaten to death in the fur farm.

Inside a fur farm

“Fur farm” is a farm which has a purpose of turn animal’s fur into clothing. Animals that are farmed for their fur live in filthy conditions and are fed meat byproducts which is food that’s not considered fit for humans to eat. Other than that, animals on fur farms are stuck in cages where they’re exposed to all sorts of weather conditions, including the blazing hot sun, pounding rain, and snow. They are treated like garbage.

Workers at these fur farms frequently skin these animals while they are still alive and struggling desperately when they are flipped onto their backs or hung by their legs or tails to skin them. When workers on these farms begin to cut the skin and fur from an animal's leg, the free limbs kick and writhe. Workers stomp on the necks and heads of animals who struggle too hard to allow a clean cut. When the fur is finally peeled off over the animals' heads, their naked, bloody bodies are thrown onto a pile of those who have gone before them. Some are still alive, breathing in ragged gasps and blinking slowly. Some of the animals' hearts are still beating five to 10 minutes after they are skinned. Killing animals for their fur is murder and it should be illegal.

And can you believe that it takes 40 animals just to make one fur coat??!! Wake up, people! Start preventing yourself and also others from wearing animal furs because there are so many great alternatives to fur, leather, and wool available, there’s no reason to wear the skin, fleece, or fur of any animal.

Ohh.. and I forget to mention, animals are made into rugs too.

And here are some facts about animal cruelty:
1. In many circuses, wild and exotic animals are trained through the use of intimidation and physical abuse. Former circus employees have reported seeing animals beaten, whipped, poked with sharp objects and even burned to force them to learn their routines!

2. Elephants who perform in circuses are often kept in chains for as long as 23 hours a day from the time they are babies.

3. More than 15 million warm-blooded animals are used in research every year.

4. Scientists estimate that 100 species go extinct every day! That's about one species every 15 minutes.

5. If you live in Pennsylvania, California, Florida, Rhode Island, Illinois, Virginia, Oregon, New York, New Jersey and Vermont you have the legal right to refuse to participate in dissection in class! In Louisiana, there is a State resolution and in Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland and New Mexico, there are Departments of Education resolutions in place that allow you to refuse to dissect, although it hasn’t yet become a law.

6. Dog fighting and cock-fighting are illegal in all 50 states.

7. It is estimated that on average it takes 1,000 dogs to maintain a mid-sized racetrack operation. New greyhounds are continually entering the system to replace greyhounds that grade-off due to injury, age or poor performance. There are currently over 30 tracks operating in the United States.

8. Tens of thousands of wild and domesticated horses from the United States are cruelly slaughtered every year to be used for horsemeat in Europe and Asia. Since the last horse slaughter plants in the U.S. were closed in 2007, thousands of horses have been shipped to Canada and Mexico for slaughter.

9. Many studies have found a link between cruelty to animals and other forms of interpersonal violence.

10. Neglect and abandonment are the most common forms of companion animal abuse in the United States.

11. A fur coat is pretty cool—for an animal to wear. Eighteen red foxes are killed to make one fox-fur coat, 55 minks to make a mink coat.

Earth Hour 2009

For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, colour and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as a vote - switching your lights off as a vote for Earth, or leaving them on as a vote for global warming.

WWF are urging the world to VOTE EARTH to reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to the world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009. IU DAY: America Here I Come!

Once again, we, the Interact Club are oraganising our annual event which is the International Understanding Day (IU Day). It will be held in Sri Garden on the 28th March 2009. The aim of this day is to enable everyone to understand & learn about other countries's culture & also their histories. Every year, there will be a different theme so this year's IU day will be: "America, Here I Come!". However, this IU Day will be held in the evening which is different from the previous one.

There will be special & exciting performances that will impress you. Not forgetting dinner (1901 hot dog), which will be provided if you purchased the ticket.

Happy Valentine's Day

Every February, across the country, candy, chocolates, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint and why do we celebrate this holiday?

Well, It was said that the Roman Emperor, Claudius II ordered young men to remain single because he do not believe that married men can be made into good soldiers as the Emperor needed to grow his army. However, priest Valentine secretly performed marriage ceremonies for young men. Eventually, Emperor Claudius found out and he had Valentine arrested and jailed up. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl who may have been his jailor's daughter. Before his death, he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still in use today.

So, Happy Valentine's Day & spread the love.

ILTS & Interact Award Ceremony & ICC Meeting

Last month, we and a few schools attended the Interact Leadership Training Seminar (ILTS) & Interact Award Ceremony and Interact Coordinating Council (ICC) meeting on 17th of January in Sri Garden's schooll hall.

And guessed what?

We are once again rewarded "The Best Interact Club" for term 2007/2008 by the Rotary Club of KL Diraja!!!!!! :D

Not forgetting to mention, Sri Garden's Youthact Club also made the school proud by winning the "The Best Youthact Club" for term 2007/2008 award once again.

After the award ceremony, it was the Leadership Seminar. All of us where seperated into several groups and the rotarians gave us all a talk and adviced all of us about how to handle our jobs with responsibility. Their advices were much appreciated and we hope that it will help us to manage our club better.

Later on, it was the ICC meeting which only the President, Vice-President & Secretary were allowed to attend due to the lack of time. So, I don't know what's it is about :P
Overall, all us had fun. Some of us are catching up with old friends while others are busy making some new ones that day.

Every year, the Chinese celebrates Chinese New Year and it traditionally begins on the first day of the first lunar month. Chinese New Year is considered a major holiday for the Chinese and has had influence on the new year celebrations of its geographic neighbours, as well as cultures with whom the Chinese have had extensive interaction.These include Aboriginal Taiwanese people, Koreans, Mongolians, Nepalese, Bhutanese, Vietnamese, and formerly the Japanese before 1873. In Mainland China,Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and other countries or regions with significant Han Chinese populations

Ever wondered when the Chinese New Year began?
The origin of the Chinese New Year is itself centuries old - in fact, too old to actually be traced.

It is unclear when the beginning of the year was celebrated before the Qin
Dynasty. Traditionally, the year was said to have begun with month 1 during the
Xia Dynasty, month 12 during the Shang Dynasty, and month 11 during the Zhou
Dynasty.
However, records show that the Zhou Dynasty began its year with month 1.
Intercalary months, used to keep the lunar calendar synchronized with the sun,
were added after month 12 during both the Shang Dynasty (according to surviving
oracle bones) and the Zhou Dynasty (according to Sima Qian).
The first Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang changed the beginning of the year to month 10 in 221 BC, also changing the location of the intercalary month to after month 9. Whether the New Year was celebrated at the beginning of month 10, or month 1, or both is unknown. In 104 BC, Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty established month 1 as the beginning of the year, where it remains.

And how it started???
Legend has it that in prehistoric time, when the Chinese had already settled in the basin of the Yellow River, their peaceful life was disrupted one wintry night when a mysterious monster attacked the citizens destroyed their crops and homes. According to sages of the time, the appearance of this monster occurred after the sun had shown 365 times. It was found that this ferocious creature, called Nien (Year), was afraid of three things : noise, illumination and the coloured red.

Thus, on the 365th evening, vigilant Chinese had their houses brightly lit and made sure that 100 solid objects had been painted red. In addition, they struck drums and gongs and performed lion dances. As a result of these precautions, the monster disappeared.This tradition of celebration, now essentially a gesture of thanksgiving, has since been faithfully observed by Chinese on the 365th evening of every lunar year.

So, don't celebrate Chinese New Year not knowing about it's history. Spread it to your friends & families :D

Trip to Rumah Sayangan

After our Final Exam, the Community Service Director, Michelle Lim and her assistant, Vivian Yeunh organised a trip to Rumah Sayangan, an orphanage located in Taman Billion, Cheras on the 25th of October 2008.

Around 15-20 of the Interact Members were involved in this trip. We arrived at approximately 10am, and we started with our first agenda, Ice Breaking!

We had to introduce ourselves, and we were divided into groups. After that, we were asked to choose our group names, and to start picking songs to sing.

Different groups sang different songs, but all of our songs were picked from the High School Musical 1 & 2. Looks like the kids love HSM? Haha.

Anyways, after that, we went outside of the house and started playing musical chairs. Those kids were cheeky! They have tricks to win the game. ><" Haha after the game, we went into the house to get some rest, and played more.

Then we had lunch. Chicken rice was on the menu! Thanks Dickson for helping us to buy lunch! Haha we sat together to have our lunch while chit-chatting and getting to know each other better. =] After having lunch with them, the Interact members cleaned the place up and we sat in a circle, singing.

13th September 2008 is a very important date for all of us interactors because it was the day that we're being installed on our post. :D

And here are the details:

The event ran smoothly and they were plenty of fascinating performances such as Choir performaces from SBU's interact club, latin dance performaces by the SG's interact club, and lots more which I cannot recall :P sorry. And I'll post up the latin dance performance soon.

There where also interesting games involving members of other schools which was hosted by our very own Comunnity Service Director, Carmen Cheong. It was rather a sucess, thanks to everyone's support. And the embarrassing moment was... I was forced to do a chicken dance with several people infront of everyone. However, I had alot of fun.

SG Interact organised our annual IU Day on the 28th of June! The theme for IU Day 2008 was China - Memoir of Mo Li.

About? The biggest logo made out of recyclable materials.

This project is basicly about 4 clubs joining together (Interact Club, Key Club, Young Entrepreneur Club & Multimedia Club) to make the biggest logo made out of recyclable material. And our aim is to make a record in Malaysia's Book of Records.

Today is our annual Teachers' Day celebration. Our theme this year is ' Guru cemerlang, negara terbilang' Interact club prepared teachers' day gifts for every teacher in the secondary section. Trip to Natural Education Centre

On the 25th of April(Friday), fellow interact members went to Natural Education Center (NEC) at Frim after school. We took a 40 minutes bus ride and start out our volunteering work as soon we reached there. We helped out to make posters and models for the center. We're divided into 5 groups to carry out our activities.

Group 4 : Terrarium poster
Group 5 : Posters on differences of fogs and toads

After work we had a Barbecue. Our club service director bought the food before head so that we can barbecue our dinner. We had some difficulties on starting up a fire tats why we went back later than the planned time. We reached school around 9.30pm.

Interact club of SG had an joint project with SG's Youthact Club and Student Council. A long 20 metres green banner is done by every student in the secondary section by placing their hand print and leave an environmental msg on the banner. This is one of the project during our environmental week. We've prepared fabric paint and permanent markers for the students as they took out their Coco time on the 15th and 16th April to make this project successful. This banner is also signed by our principle Mr. Khaw and Mr B.K.Gun during our closing ceremony of the environmental program.

Composite box project

In conjunction with our school's environmental week, interact club made a composite box from dry leaves, saw dust, kitchen waste and much more decomposable material. Great thanks to Afiq who helped us made the wooden box ( 3 x 3 inches) On the 28th of March (Friday) we stayed back after school to fill our composite box. We collected dry leaves around our school field .

We had our annual sports day on the 5th of April 2008 at the Cheras Bola Sepak Stadium. Interactors stayed back after the sports day and done some cleaning. We picked up rubbish around the big stadium.

Visit to old folks home

Interact members went to Ampang Old Folks Home on the 22nd March (Sat) with our teacher adviser, Pn Rohaida and our Head of CCA Mrs.Shemallah. At 10.00am we gathered in school and took a 15 minutes ride to our destination. We had a warm welcome and we had 2 groups. About 8 members were helping out in the kitchen as we are making 'tong yuen' for the old folks and the other members are free to move a bout the old folks home and have a chat with the old folks. We went back to school at 1.00 pm.

The Interact club and Youthact club of Sri Garden has been rewarded 'The Best Interact Club' and 'The BEst Youthact Club' for the term 2006/2007 by the Rotary Club of KL Diraja.

On the 25th of Feb, the president of the Rotary club, Encik Attan came to SG to pass the trophy and congratulate us.

Here by, i'll like to congratulate all the Board of Directors and members of the Interact club under president, Amanda Mun and teacher adviser, Ms Khoo Siew Hoon and Pn Rohaidawati.

Funding project

This is our only funding project through out the year. So our members had worked hard for it. 1st of all, me, Sonia, Mei Ni and Yuan Kay went on a search for suitable items for the coming Chinese New Year as our funding project.

We've decided to sell zodiac straps which is suitable to be hung on hand phones, bags, etc.... We included a note about your fortune according to your zodiac with the zodiac strap in a gold/silver fortune pouch.After that, I've worked on posters and completed the order forms for all secondary classes. The forms were distributed on the 28th Jan and collected on the 30th of Jan.

During the CNY school break (2/2/2008) , our members went back to school to do the packaging in the PAD room.

We have around 400 orders and the items were passed to the recipients on the 13th of Feb.

Thanks to the participation of the club's members this funding project is a success!

On the 5th of November,we (the form 4 interact club members) made our way to the library during the coco hours. wondering what are we doing at the library? Well we're wrapping library books actually( BM ones) as part of the community service projects.

First!~ we need plastic...

We only have 11 members on that day some of them were absent. Intotal we've wrapped 76 books in 2 hours! NICELY~ haha

Installation Day 2007

This year, our installation day was a joint installation of 5 clubs.

iii) The Interact Club of SMK Convent Bukit Nanas
iv) The Interact Club of Sekolah Sri Garden
v) The Youthact Club of Sekolah Sri Garden

The details of the event are as follows:

First of all, we would like to thank everyone who came to watch our Installation. Secondly, thanks to the other clubs involved in the planning of this Installation. It was really a rush with never ending msn discussions but we managed to pull through it somehow.

After dividing the jobs equally, SSG Interact and Youthact were in-charge of the programme books and souvenirs as well as a performance. SSG youthact and interact's performance was a sketch (the script was done in 1 hr btw). The story is basically about 2 bad boys whose lives took a drastic turn after they joined the youthact and interact club (they had no choice as they were kicked out of chess club). Considering everything was prepared in 4 days, i would say it was not bad. >.<

Although no rotarians could make it, we recorded the entire event so that we could show it to them.

Before i stop typing, thanks again to everyone who came.

Volunteers in the"Valentina Project"

On the 30th of October, one day before Halloween, the Interact Club of SSG helped out as volunteers in the ‘Valentina Project’ organized by PetPositive in collaboration with FRIM Negara. 14 Form 4 members as well as our teacher advisor, Puan Rohaidawati, took part in this project and we went to FRIM Negara from 8.30 am till about 3pm.

PetPositive is the first and only nationally registered non-profit Society in the country which uses animals to empower the lives of disabled and elderly persons. The Valentina project, was named after PetPositive’s 9 year-old rabbit, Valentina which died of cancer earlier this year.

The objective of this trip is to give about 20-disabled and elderly persons an opportunity that's never been offered before - to go on a nature walk under the thick canopy of wild flora and fauna in FRIM. Participants made up of the blind, Deaf, persons with spinal injuries to others with neurological conditons will be guided through the forest on a special path in FRIM which has been designed for wheelchairs.

Basically, our job was to chat with the disabled people as well as guide them through the walk. The physically stronger members helped push the wheelchairs on the walk. We also helped out in serving food, registration and so on.
The Interact Club of SSG was really lucky as we were part of the first group of people to ever walk on the disabled walk. Even though it was only a short path, about 400m long, there were many different types of plants and animals. It was really touching to see how much the disabled people are enjoying themselves.

Another objective for this project is to promote AAT (animal assisted therapy). A number of animals, were brought to allow the disabled as well as elderly to try to get used to the furry creatures and accept them as their companions. There were about 4 dogs, a cat, 2 rabbits and even frogs from the jungle.

Hannah, Mrs. Lynda(the organizer of this project) and I went one day before to help catch the frogs. We were led by Norsham and Elango from FRIM Negara. Btw, it was at night and it was raining. Therefore, there were lots of leeches. >.<
This event also came out on the news. It came out at about 8.20pm and was about a minute long on NTV7. Quite a number of Interact members appeared on screen.

Year One Sandwich Program

On the 24h of September 2007, the Interact Club of SG organized a program for the year one kids. Approximately 16 club members from form 4, taught the kids how to make egg sandwiches. This program was held during the upper secondary coco time which was from 8am to 10.10am, on Monday, at the school canteen.

We started with a demonstration on how to make an egg sandwich, led by Hannah. After the demonstration, the kids were divided into groups and they started working on their sandwiches. The members were in-charge of each group and their job was to assist the kids. All the members did a wonderful job as they were very patient with the kids.

After they have made the sandwich, they can enjoy their masterpiece. There were a number of kids who were thoughtful as they wanted to bring home the sandwiches to their parents.

Lastly, before the kids go off back to their classes, there was a short Q&A session. Simply questions were asked such as

a) name an ingredient used to make an egg sandwich

b) what was the first step we took to make the egg sandwich

c) and so on

The kids were rewarded with sweets for every question answered correctly. Although it was only sweets, the kids were really excited to receive them.

After the event, the interactors were lucky as there were extra ingredients. We enjoyed our own sandwiches before we started cleaning up.

With that, the programme ended.

Last month, the form 4 members made cards and a banner for all the form 5 students to wish them good luck and all the best in their coming spm examination. The banner was signed by all the form 5 students and soon to be hang up. As for the cards, each large cards were signed by secondary teachers and given out to each form 5 classes 2 weeks ago.

Fellowship Day 2007

16th July 2007 is our fellowship day for the year.. In case you're wondering wad is fellowship day about, its actually juz like a farewell party done by the form 4 members to the form 5 members as they are goin to concentrate on their studies and 'pass' the club to us ( the form 4 ).

And so, in our discussion, hannah suggest that we held an amazing race.. Later on, me , audrey and sonia decided to held an Amazing Race + a little bit of Fear Factor on the fellowship day... after 1 weeks of planning, all the details and activity was settled and invitation to all form 5 members were given out.
On that day....we gather at 5sc3 class as usual and details and activity was announced to the form 5 by me and audrey while other members were busy with their own station around the school compound. After that, all the groups are lined up outside the class.

Okie... this is my last post as the president of the Interact Club.

Personally, it had been a very valuable and memorable experience being the president of the Interact Club. I made a lot of new friends and learnt plenty from all those around me.

In conjunction with this year's IU Day, the interact club of ssg is organising a talent time competition for ssg's students to showcase their talent. All the performances must be related to England. one reason why we decided to stage a talent time competition is because we found out that most talent time competitions originate from England. For example, the famous American Idol series actually started out as Pop Idol in England.

Besides the talent time competition, we will also be having a fashion show, quiz show, exhibitions (a lot of effort put into this ya!), good food and of course people. There will be judges and prizes for the talent time competition of course.

ICC Meeting will be held in St John's Institution on the 2nd of June 2007 from 10-12. From 12-2p.m., BOD members of ssg are required to stay back for a brief meeting for IU night. Most likely, our meeting would be held at a mamak stall =.=.

St John is located at Jalan Bkt Nanas near Hang Tuah or Masjid Jamek station (i'm not quite sure myself). For more details, you can call me.

Secondly, Jia Min has done the programme book cover for our IU night, so please check it out at her blog unless I get my photobucket to work in the next 10 minutes or so. Comments are welcomed.

Thirdly, if you've got friends who want to perform for IU Night (strictly for ssg students only), please tell them to get a form from me when school reopens. Oh, and remind them that the theme is STRICTLY england-related. They can: sing, dance, act (solo-acting, duet acting or play), play badminton on stg or whatever else they like as long as it's entertaining and related to theme.

Auditions might be held if we've got too many performers (most likely we would need to hold auditions).

Pls get the exhibition work done ASAP.

Paint My World With Colours

Ok, so I wasn't there because I had to attend accounts tuition at a friend's house nearby. Still, I was very proud when I spied on them from the balcony of the 12th floor of my friend's house. They had already started work even before my tuition started. And mind you, school had just ended at that time.

Ms. Siew, our PE teacher, suggested that we, interactors, decorated the new and bland sports storeroom for her. Agreeing, Jia Min was assigned to do the design and me, purchase the brushes and paint.

The design was, to me, really good and I'm glad that the whole thing turned out as planned. Even the sun was kind on them hardworking people the whole time although it did rain a little later on (and that's because some of them had the nerve to sing "It's Raining Man" while painting).

Hannah was supposed to do this report since, like I said, I wasn't there but she's sort of busy with loads of other stuff.

Anyway, after tuition, I rushed down to the basketball court to see that it was nearly completed and everyone looked so well... hardworking? determined? enthusiastic? Yeah. All who were there helped out one way or another.

I wished I stayed on but due to some unavoidable circumstance, I could not stay on to watch them complete the handiwork. I found out that they actually came back to school on Monday morning during the holidays to do some last minute touch-ups mainly the outline.

Overall, it was a huge success and it's really sweet to think that this mural will be on the walls of our sports storeroom for years after we are gone. Cheers and thanks to those who contributed in making this a success. :)

Interact District Conference 2006

I have a post about this somewhere in my personal blog so since I have already forgotten some bits and pieces about that event, I shall repost it and edit it for this blog: *found it! XP

District 3300 Interact Conference 2006

And so, I attended the conference along with my oh-so-faithful secretary, the sn00b, Keegan Lee Guan Ru. Jia Min was having a fever so she couldn't make it.

Initially, I expected the conference to be terribly boring thx to the awful-looking programme (so many speeches) but I was proven wrong. It was 100x better than expected.

Day 1

Registration was open from 12 to 2 but as usual, I thought that the registration closed at 12 so as usual, I came about half an hour earlier than expected with Keegan. Keegan and I met up in Mid Valley initially and we took a cab there.

We played chess while waiting for the other KL Diraja ppl because we couldn't collect our room keys until they arrived. Those ppl, who live in KL btw, unlike the many other interactors from many other states who could make it early/in time, only arrived at abt one. GAH! >.< After they arrived, we became engrossed in erm... talking. And talking. And more talking. Then, we got into groups of 3 for our rooms. There were 2 colleges, college 1 and college 2. Lucky for us, all of us KL diraja ppl where in the same college: college 1. The guys were in one building and the girls in another. My roommates were SBU's Wong Hui Yat and a Switzerland exchange student named Tina (which she pronounced as Cina). After settling down, we had our ice-breaking session. All of us (about 700 interactors ++ mind you) were divided into 20 groups. Keegan was in the same group as me: Group 1. So we got into our groups for the icebreaking session where we introduced ourselves and did a banana dance and mooned the word MISSISSIPPI with our bottoms. -______- Then, we had tea in the cafeteria where we all got to chat, talk, chat, talk, meet someone new, eat, chat and talk. We were given a briefing in which few ppl paid attention to due to the noise pollution. Then we had dinner. And after that, we had our rest time, well spent with card games (mainly Bluff/Bullshit/Cheat/Nonsense/You *censored liar) and more talking. We also played police and killer. :) At about one (despite saying that our curfew's at 11, rotaractors themselves joined us till 1 a.m. in the cafeteria), we went to our rooms. Marcia and Evon (CBN) as well as Angeline (SAB) crashed into our room. We chatted till 3.00a.m.++ about a lot of things so needless to say, we didn't get much sleep.

Day 2

We woke up at abt 7.00a.m., in my case, 6.45a.m. T-T

Had breakfast and left to Perdanasiswa, all dressed in our respective BOD uniforms. Perdanasiswa is an auditorium. With a stage. And seats. =.="

There, there was the opening ceremony (flags, national anthems, interact songs, mexican waves, victory clap, roll calls...) and then, we listened to 2 talks (first one: interesting, 2nd: sleepworthy). There were so many of us! O.o

The exchange students under the name of rotary were introduced. In total, there were: 2 japanese girls, 2 brazilian girls, 1 brazilian ronaldhino lookalike (who can bloody sing and play the guitar damn well), 1 mexican guy, 2 german guys (elizabeth! just to let you know, one guy was said to be very hot ;)) and Tina. I think thats abt it.

They introduced themselves and told us 'bout their respective countries. The brazilian girl speaks Portugese! She taught us a phrase: Chia Mu (meaning: I love you) ;) Mexican: Ola' meaning hello though most ppl probably know already.

After our teabreak (or was it lunch?), we had a group discussion session. Basically, we had to rank 15 items given from being the most important to the least important whilst lost at sea. The situation was: 1. Our ship caught fire and was sinking.2. We have an inflatable raft with paddles.3. We have 15 items to rank (were not destroyed in fire in ship)

After ranking them (quite funny), we compared our answers to the experts' answers given and we only had one correct. HAHAHA. nobody expected the actual answers to be the answers. Fyi, the most important item when you are lost at sea is a mirror for signaling and the least important is a compass. wahaha. We are never going to survive if we ever do get lost at sea.

Then, we had preparations for our presentation. Each group has to come up with a 1 minute advertisement for a product picked through a lucky draw using a prop given. Our product: socks. Prop: A stuffed duck. Haha. Hence, the advert: Duck Socks. We had a good leader in this guy from VI named Lylia whom we call Lydia who's very experienced (this was his 3rd conference apparently)

Anyways, we had a special dinner that night in our cafeteria. After that, we were back to Perdanasiswa for the presentations. It was really grand, like those concerts you watch on TV. There were 2 judges for the advertisement competition and they were quite direct and critical. They had to give their comments after each performance while the leader had to stand on stg.

We sat according to our groups so we interacted a lot and exchanged numbers.

My group's performance was quite diff. than the others cuz we did our cheer at the beginning (banana dance) cuz we didn't know we were supposed to go straight to commercial and it was part of our commercial anyways. Everyone was over semangat-ed thx to our hyper leader and I think we did ok. XP At least we didn't feel too awkward or embarrassed and didn't care anyway.

The other groups were good. There were products like tissue paper, shampoo, detergent, pepper spray... I dun think anyone had a stg fright!! haha! all so extreme :P. A lot of ah kuas. One of them won best actor. hahaha! My god! He really did well and his legs... so smooth. XP

In the end, Group 8 got champ (Marcia's group. Her one-liner: Yeah, man) Haha!

After 10 performances, the brazilian played on his guitar and sang brazilian songs.

THAT WAS FANTABULOUSLY MARVELOUSLY GOOOOOD!

That guy can really sing. Everyone shouted till they were hoarse. More mexican waves. A few I love yous. XP I like the 3rd song which was Spanish. La Mamba i think. Quite famous. His first song was very nice too though i dunno the title T-T

After all 20 performances, there was a band. Name: Japanz i think. Or something which sounds like that. Initially, Kevin (SJI) and I thought that they would be terrible cuz before we went in the auditorium, we heard some awful-sounding singing. We were dead wrong. They were FANTASTICALLY BRILLIANTLY AMAZINGLY SURPRISINGLY MAGNIFICENTLY ASTOUNDINGLY WONDERFUL!

They sang: Kau Ilhamku, a Faye Wong song, Mungkin Nanti <3, and Can't Take My Eyes Off You. A lot of us sang along with them for all songs (except maybe the Faye Wong one). Kau Ilhamku had a rocky edge starting from the middle. The guitarist was good. After they finished, we all demanded for more and we got more! 4 Non Blonde's What's Going On!!!! haha! Keegan and I sang along to this one for it brings 'special' memories. ;) After that, winners were announced and we headed back to our dorms. So sleepy. During supper, we chatted a bit. Then, headed to bathe and sleep.

Day 3

Farewell day.

At Perdanasiswa, we had 2 talks (not very boring... but Keegan and I now despise the word: nationbuilding). There's one guy which sounds a lot like Willy Wonka!!!!!!!! That's just freaky! O.o

We had a business game as well (involving some maths). We got into groups of 6-10 for this and KL Diraja was one of the 3 winners!! XP they made me go on stg for the 'final rd' where I had to (along with 2 other reps) trace the figure '6' with my right finger while rotating my right leg in clockwise direction. Haha. So weird. You try :P

In the end, everyone was a winner. =.="

Then, we had the closing ceremony. Speeches, sad songs (When will I see you again? (sappy lyrics)) We had plenty of hugs. handshakes. goodbyes. take cares. see you i hopes... So nice. More mexican waves. Shouts. Cheers. Claps.

It was very nice.

There were party streamers (Those cylinder stuff. you press something and streamers go pop) and all that. some were crying. They formed a long chain (like a train) and marched around the auditorium. They had weird dances. Sang random songs. Haha! VI even did a hakka dance at the exit.

Made a lot a lot of new friends all over Malaysia. Penang, Perak, Kedah, Selangor, Seremban/N9, Kuantan and Kuala Terengganu.

Overall, it was a brilliantly great experience. The only regret I had was not bringing a camera. :/ but am going to go hunt for pics from the other interactors. XP

Memorable bits: (mainly for those who went. sorry.)

1. Keegan scared his roommates (Joseph Cheong (SHS) and Alex Cheah (SBU)) with his erm.. horny side.
2. Alex looked cute as a girl XP

5. Keegan to Joseph(SHS): These days have been simply MAGICAL. ;) *shudders
6. Jun Ian, the tap-dancing penguin!
7. Angeline's new record in 'the number of hours chatting with a stranger within 24 hrs': 7 hours. XP try beating that!

Installation Day

We had our Installation Day last year. Here are the details:

Date: 28 October 2006
Time: 10.00-2.00p.m.
Venue: SSG School Hall
Theme: Carpe Diem

It was a joint Installation Day with SMK Aminuddin Baki and of course, Sekolah Sri Garden's Youthact Club. It was a rather fun event for we had installation movies to introduce each and every one of our board members. The event went very smoothly with full cooperation from all parties. There were plenty of interesting performances such as a dance and a drama for SAB's interact club, a traditional Japanese dance which involved even the audience by SSG's interact club, a movie entitled: Memoirs of a Geisha by the previous batch of directors from the SSG Interact Club and many more which I can't really remember. Perhaps we should post that movie up on Youtube. Hmmm...

There were interesting games involving members of other schools as well. Speaking of which, the turnout was rather good thanks to everyone's support. :-) Hopefully, our IU Day, which is coming soon, will be as successful.

Trip to Rumah Sayangan Orphanage

Here's an old report I dug out of nowhere:

Sayang the Orphans

23 August 2006, Kuala Lumpur- It was a bright wednesday morning when 10 interactors from Sekolah Sri Garden set out to Taman Billion, Cheras for a good cause: to visit the orphans in Rumah Sayangan. The good Samaritans are *drumrolls Keegan Lee, Lee Jia Min, Lee Chee June, Hiew Yen Wei, Tan Ze Yen, Ken Chong, Oh Yin Lin, June Chan, Elizabeth Wong and *cough cough, the president.

The great teacher advisor who accompanied these thoughtful students is Puan Raja, the one and only. She was thoughtful enough to offer dried sotong and fish which she bought from Lumut to her fellow charges. All hail the royal one!

The school van arrived at the venue at about 10a.m. Unfortunately, the owner was not around (joy!). However, her assistant, Mr. Edward was there. Despite the seemingly cold welcome from the home operators(I'm not sure if they liked us very much or perhaps they were just busy), the welcome we received from the kids was very very warm. :)

We started off with an ice-breaking session. fter that, we taught them how to make paper cranes which were stuffed into a lovely glass bottle. ur agenda was supposed to end with the origami-making session, but we had one hour more to kill.

So, we taught them how to play Police and Killer. Surprisingly, they actually enjoyed it. O.o

It actually got more fun towards the end. If only we could have begun earlier. Anyways, we sentenced the losing parties to a brief humiliation. We witnessed June dance the macarina. We failed in our bid to frame Yin Lin and Chee June for murder. We witnessed Keegan crying like a baby, and we found out that the kids in Rumah Sayangan are a big fan of High School Musical- oh and they can sing too ;).

As I mentioned earlier, the kids were really really adorable! There's this boy Joshua, who stuck to June and liked sitting on her lap. :P And then there's Esther , Vivien and Cindy who kept hugging me and called me mummy! O.O

There were other volunteers there on that day. There was one group of people who gave them haircuts. Another group of volunteers (three actually) gave them tuition. Apparently, they rotate tutoring them every two weeks. That sounds like a very worthwhile thing to do. Hmmm...

The trip ended with more hugs, plenty and I mean, PLENTY of goodbyes and a huge group picture. :) Joshua actually cried and refused to let June and the others go. I only remember plenty of hugging. =.="

Overall, it was a great and enjoyable experience and I think so of us are already thinking of visiting them again someday.

Trip to Beryl's and KLCC

How? School Van

Yes, we, the Interact Club of SSG went on a trip to these chocolate centres to:
1. Spend time. We had nothing better to do after the exams.
2. Relax and learn more about chocolates.
3. Eat chocolates.
4. Eat more chocolates.
5. Buy chocolates to eat more at home.

First, we went to KLCC (a lot of them thought that we were really going to KLCC =.=). There, we were given a very very short and lousy tour where they showed us the fake durian fruit and cocoa leaves. Then, we were allowed to roam the centre and test some chocolates. That's the best part. XP the cuppachinno bean chocolate was REALLY REALLY GOOOOD! It was a hit! The frozen strawberry fruit chocolate in which realy frozen strawberries were used coated with chocolate was good too. Then there were the durian chocolates (Real durian fruit) and weird stuff like the sesame peanut butter chocolate, and some other weird stuff I cannot remember. Oh, there's this curry chocolate which we didn't get to try. :/

Next, we went to Beryl's which had a fake cow at the entrance. There, someone was actually nice enough to explain and demonstrate how chocolates are made. We even saw the machines and bagaikan rusa masuk kampung, we kept asking if everything's real. =.= "Yes, everything here is all real," said the person explaining exasperatedly for the 4354687242 time.

Then, we got to eat more chocolates. The chocolates in Beryl's are cheaper and they taste good too. We managed to trick Jia Min (who can't stand even a bit of spicy-ness) into eating this chilli chocolate which looked like dark chocolate. You should have seen her reaction. XP The workers looked so worried for they were afraid that we would polish everything. XP muahaha. I recommend the tiramisu chocolate, the mint dark chocolate, THE DARK CHOCOLATE (i like dark chocolate. Sorry! XP) and according to chee june, the green tea chocolate (though I don't like it). They have durian chocolates as well. Try the chilli!

XP Overall, it was a very 'fulfilling' experience and we ended up spending a lot on chocolates we wouldn't be able to finish anyway. Note: Keegan still has 3/4 packet of mint dark chocolates now. Note to keegan: sharing is caring. :)

Doughnuts Sale

Yes, we sold Dunkin Doughnuts to our fellow friends and they sold like hot cakes! This is probably because our canteen forgot to order food at that time =.=. Still! It was a great experience and the aroma of the doughnuts! Oh, so tempting! However, I guess we got sick of doughnuts after the first week. Ugh.. no more doughnuts please! >.< Donation for Flood Victims and Trip to Johor

This is our biggest comm. serve project so far but I did not go for the trip so I shall make this brief. On the first week of February, our Interact Club was given the honour of collection donations in aid of the flood victims in Johor. We went around to all secondary classrooms to appeal for donations for one whole week. The students were quite generous and supportive. Therefore, we managed to collect about RM 10000++.

We were in charge of collecting, counting and handing over the money to the school which then prepared three mock cheques to be given to three schools identified. I regret to say that I do not remember the names of those schools but I shall refer to those who went and update a.s.a.p. I do know that there was one chinese school, one tamil school and one national school though. They also visited the homes of several badly affected families and gave them donations as well.

They managed to interact a little with students from two schools but not with the last school they went for school had already ended when they arrived there.Apparently, the food there was very good (there was one school which served them lunch). However, Miss Khoo suffered from diarrheoa from drinking water from this jar which even Mr. Rama, another teacher who accompanied the students, dared not touch. According to June, the bumpy ride on the school van which was their mode of transport, felt as though they were riding on the Osim I-gallop. O.o

All this discomfort was worth it though for despite feeling tired at the end of the day, they claimed that it was a very eye-opening experience. See what we do for the sake of service above self? XPshall post some pictures soon. Enjoy... XP

Hurray! Hurray!

I think a few of you already know about our newly-built website: www.geocities.com/interactssg. We had some problems with it at first but it is fixed now.

This blog is basically a site where we can update interactors on what we have been doing in a more detailed and chronological order. You can find out about the more general stuff about our club from our website, which we will try our best to update (more like: we will try our best to push our webmaster to update).
